DIY: Affordable Rainbow Hair

A little while ago my best mate popped over for a few days. We had been planning an exciting little operation for weeks while I had been visiting my dad. I did her hair rainbow!!
Well, that's kind of lying it was green, purple, pink and blue.

Of course, with most at-home hair dyes you have NO IDEA what to expect, and due to a previous encounter with a hair dye from the same company in a silver which did nothing we weren't expecting a miracle, but as if Jesus had just walked in and came in the form of  3 Manic Panic dyes in 'Atomic Turquoise', 'Electric Lizard' and 'Purple Haze'. They worked amazingly!! We also used 'Cotton Candy Pink', which didn't work so well, but if you bleached the crap out of your hair, to paper white then I'm pretty sure it would show up better than it did with us, simply because it was a lighter color than the rather deep turquoise, purple and green. All of the dyes were in the '"Classic" Cream Formula' (the ones in the big tubs). They were very easy to apply, we didn't even manage to get hair dye brushes to just used paintbrushes from the 99p store!! I would definitely recommend these colours on first result, although I'm not sure of the last...

So that's the review over, here's the how-to.

Step 1: Bleach your hair. I used Schwarzkopf 'Live Color XXL Colour Intense Blonde Absolute Platinum 00A'. It's best to start off with greasy-few-day-old hair if you want to damage your hair less, but for an even better result I suggest washing hair soon before. From there on follow the instructions and try not to die from the serious stench.

Here's the hair before washing out, for this particular look we wanted the colours to get brighter at the ends, so we emphasised the bleaching on the tips. Also, don't worry if you're hair starts to warm up during the application that's normal.

And after...

Next, the exciting part!! Applying the colour, we actually did this the next day to give her hair a break but it's not necessary. First, section hair off into 3(make sure the top section is very thin) sections for fine hair and then part into 2 and throw them over your shoulders(to the back if you are doing this yourself which I don't recommend, or to your front if someone is doing it for you).

To apply the colour use a tint brush(or paintbrush) and grab random sized sections as you go and start painting them. To achieve the exact same look as we did here, start with the bottom section and paint it ALL PINK, using only two sections and then wrapping them in cling film or hair foil. It helped tying the hair in a loose knot at the top to help the cling film stay.
Next take down the next section and start again but this time, lots more and smaller sections. First,(R-L) blue in the front-or near face- strands and then go into purple(very small section) then blue(VS), then blue mixed with green, green, blue, blue-purple, blue, purple and blue.
Final section; again, ALL PINK, same method.

This is what you should be left with;
Looks like a multicolour octopus or seriously awesome dreads.
To get a more vivid colour blow-dry the dreads. Leave on for 30-50 minutes.
Okay, then take off the cling film.
Now rinse, don't use any shampoo.
.
Comb through...

Then blow-dry again.

Then you'll have this!!
Leave in  a loose braid overnight.(Optional)

Then curl, I used the Remington Pearl Curling Wand. First section...
Second section...

Comb through(optional)...

I hope that wasn't too unbearably long for you and that's it!!

What colours would you use?
